Cymraeg Welsh

Welcome

We are a vibrant department dedicated to the teaching of Welsh as a second language.

Our aim is to promote our language and culture to children of all backgrounds in order to instil a sense of pride and delight in their heritage. The acquisition of Welsh as a second language is a valuable tool when applying for college placements or employment as well as having a great social benefit where pupils can access contemporary media and literature.

In the Inspection report, the department was praised for its results at all levels whilst KS5 results were deemed to be exemplary.
In KS4, our GCSE resources are used as exemplar materials throughout Wales.
We are proud of the fact that large numbers of pupils opt to study this subject.

Blwyddyn 7/ Year 7

As a department we strive to make the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible for the pupils, therefore the first term is spent consolidating and revising topics that they have already studied in the primary school, obviously then developing these further by introducing new vocabulary and sentence patterns. In Year 7 pupils are taught mixed ability, in their tutor groups.

  • 'Croeso' - 'Welcome'
  • Amser Hamdden - Leisure Time
  • Pynciau Ysgol - School Subjects

Blwyddyn 9/ Year 9

Year 9 is obviously very important to the pupils as this is the year that they make their option choices. As a department we offer our full support to the pupils and encourage those who are interested in taking Welsh as a full course GCSE to arrange an appointment to see us on the 'Option Evening', where pupils and parents have the opportunity to discuss the course with staff, who will be able to answer any questions and offer advice where necessary. We also hold ask 'Menter Iaith' to talk to the pupils about the advantages of learning Welsh for the future. Again pupils are set according to ability in this year group, taking full advantage of the resources available.

  • Prynu Dillad - Buying Clothes
  • Ffrindiau - Friends
  • Bwyd - Food

CLWB CYMRAEG!
In the Welsh department we have a very popular lunch time club where pupils in Years 7, 8 & 9 are encouraged to attend. It is an excellent way to practise the Welsh that they learn in the classroom and also to experience the language as a social skill rather than just another subject on the school curriculum. It helps pupils to realise that learning Welsh is a tool to be used rather than something they forget about after the lesson. We are very lucky at Bishop Gore to have strong links with 'Menter Iaith' in Swansea, an organisation which promotes Welsh amongst young people, who come in to school on a fortnightly basis.

TGAU/ GCSE
Under the Welsh Language Act 1993 all public bodies in Wales are required to prepare a scheme stating what measures they will take to promote the language on an equal basis with English. Thus, more and more employers both in the public and private sectors realize how important it is to be able to offer a service to customers in both English and Welsh. The GCSE course has been designed to prepare pupils to use the language both in the work place and socially. Learning Welsh can be great fun and the ability to use both languages is a great advantage.

The course is designed for those pupils whose first language is not Welsh and who have obtained their Welsh at school and for whom Welsh is not the every day language at home.

The aims of the course are to give pupils a first hand experience of the language and to develop their ability to understand and use the language for practical communicative purposes.
